47th Chestnut Festival - Soriano nel Cimino - Viterbo - Italy - October 2014
Whilst I was in Italy recently I wanted to attend a Sagra delle Castagne, a Chestnut Festival. It was the right time of the year and there is a special taste to freshly roasted chestnuts, cooked in the open air. I was therefore delighted that after lunching with friends in the area, that we were able to attend the 47th Chestnut Festival in Soriano nel Cimino in the late afternoon and evening. It is a very popular event and as you will see from my photos the crowds were enormous. Fortunately my friend knew that parking would be a problem so we caught a courtesy bus that was running people up and down to the centro storico, perfect solution. There was a lot more happening than just the roasting of chestnuts with enactments of historical events taking place. If you want to know more about the event do visit the Official Website.

I love roast chestnuts, however, find them difficult to get out of their skins when I have done them myself. Why is it that the ones you buy on the streets pop out of their shells instantly? Whenever we go to Italy in the autumn we always gather them in the woods to bring home.
Love your shots and that fire place to roast the chestnuts is just amazing. Love that shot you did from above. Also, you are so right that there is a big crowd, but no better place to enjoy than Italy. We enjoyed roasted chestnuts when we were in Rome, but have never seen them in the US. Thanks for sharing and hoping your day is wonderful!
Very interesting Lindy. I love the atmosphere of these seasonal food festivals especially when they reflect the historical heritage of a small town. You got a good shot from above of the big chestnut pan. We flew over Lake Bolsena and Marta on our way down to Rome last month and I thought of you once again. I'm glad that your time there recently was less distressing. Thank you so much for sharing your photos.
I told bob last week when I was caught humming chestnuts roasting on an open fire, that I have never seen or tasted one.. i love the fire shot of them roasting and all the photos are fantastic.
Everywhere I find you today you remind me not only of all the places there are to see but also of all the foods there are to try. New adventures await!
